An accepted offer doesn’t mean
the hire is secure.
The time between accepting an offer and starting a new role can be one of the most vulnerable stages of the recruitment process. Without the right contact and reassurance, excitement can fade and counter-offers can become much harder to resist.
In this short video, Stephen Brown explains how employers can keep new hires engaged, reassured and looking forward to their first day.
Why the gap before day one matters
After months of searching, interviewing and negotiating, an accepted offer can feel like the finish line. But the candidate still needs to resign, work through their notice period and manage the response from their current employer.
Leaving them in silence during this period creates an opportunity for doubt, competing approaches and counter-offers to take hold. Thoughtful pre-boarding helps maintain momentum and makes the new hire feel part of the business before they arrive.
Good pre-boarding should reassure, involve and build momentum without overwhelming your new hire.
Simple ways to keep your new hire engaged
Make the welcome personal
Send a short welcome message or video from their manager and future colleagues rather than relying solely on formal paperwork.
Keep communication going
Check in regularly, ask how their resignation has gone and give them an opportunity to raise any questions or concerns.
Build an early connection
Where appropriate, invite them to meet the team or attend a social event, training session or informal catch-up.
Help them picture their future
Share useful details about their first week, workspace, equipment, projects or the people they will be working with.
